Wayne picnic marks village's 175th
The village of Wayne will celebrate its 175th anniversary this weekend at its annual community picnic.
Wayne Day opens with kite-flying at 3 p.m. Saturday and continues with and hayrides led by Percheron horses at Dunham Field, east of Dunham Road on Army Trail Road, followed by a bonfire and marshmallow roasting at dusk. There also will be a pig roast and live music by the Grasslands Quartet, as well as exhibits from local groups and businesses.
"The whole idea is just to have a gathering," said Ann Issel of the Wayne Historic Preservation Society, which helps plan the event. "It really is a lot of fun, and you meet people you wouldn't normally meet throughout your day."
Issel said two area businesses, Abbott Tree Care and Prestige Nursery Garden Center, donated a pig to roast in the evening; village trustees will serve the food.
Families are encouraged to bring their own picnicking supplies, including chairs and blankets. The rain date is Sunday.
"We're praying for good weather," Issel said.
Admission is free, but some items, such as kites, will be available for purchase. For details, call village hall at (630) 584-3090.
