Geneva American Legion Post 75: The Fox River - Geneva American Legion Post 75 will be offering a "First Friday Fish Fry" from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Legion Hall, 22 S. Second St., Geneva. On the first Friday of every month, a variety of seafood and chicken entrees with a wide selection of side dishes will be available at a cost of $7.50 to $9. Boy Scout Troop 13: Boy Scout Troop 13's second annual "It's Your River Day" along with the Friends of the Fox River from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 3 at the Holmer House, 1145 N. They invite you to pitch in at the Fox River Rescue Cleanup sponsored by Troop 13 and the Friends of the Fox River. Dress appropriately for the weather and task at hand. Wear clothes that you can get wet and dirty are recommended. No shorts allowed for the cleanup portion, as poison ivy will be most everywhere. They will be cleaning up along the bike path down along the river behind Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Aurora Junior Woman's Club: The Aurora Junior Woman's Club invites women 18 and older interested in becoming members to their Oktoberfest meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5 at McCleery Elementary School, 1002 W. Illinois Ave. in Aurora. The meeting will include dinner at a cost of $12 and a complimentary watercolor instruction session with artist Mary Weis of Illustrative Musings. The Aurora Junior Woman's Club/Aurora Children's Dental Services is a not-for-profit organization made up of women from throughout the Fox Valley and has been dedicated to serving the needs of local children for more than 50 years. Each year the AJWC stages a musical production to entertain the families of the Fox Valley -this year's musical will be "Sleeping Beauty." The profits from the performances go directly back to the community in the form of dental work for children who otherwise would not be able to afford the care. It also funds donations to school theater programs, Make-A-Wish programs and other local charitable endeavors.
Zonta Club: The women of the Zonta Club of St. Charles-Geneva-Batavia and Zonta West-Illinois will hold their annual fundraising auction "Helping Women Bloom" at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6 at Prairie Landing Golf Club in West Chicago. The evening will feature live and silent auction items with dozens of gift baskets as well as a sit down dinner. Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns will be the emcee and auctioneer. Proceeds from this event enable Zonta to provide scholarships to women and girls in the Fox Valley Community and to support local service organizations. There is still plenty of time to get involved with the Zonta auction. The group is looking for sponsors and donors. Valley Human Resource Association: The Valley Human Resource Association will offer a program on "Employee Motivation During Difficult Times" on Wednesday, Oct. 14. Rose Hollister, principal at Hollister Consulting, will be presenting. The meeting will be held at the Lincoln Inn, 1345 S. Batavia Ave., Batavia. The schedule for the meeting will be registration and networking at 7:15 a.m.; breakfast at 7:30 a.m.; and the speaker from 8 to 9 a.m. Hollister has 20 years of experience in management and leadership development. She has created dozens of leadership programs in her career. Clients have included University of Chicago Hospitals, Advocate Health Care, Nicor, McDonald's, Grainger and Jones Lang LaSalle. Batavia Mothers' Club Foundation: The Batavia Mothers' Club Foundation is holding a 50/50 raffle, in conjunction with its 24th annual Autumn Arts and Craft Show. The drawing will be held Saturday, Oct. 17 at the Craft Show held at Rotolo Middle School. You do not have to be present to win. Only 100 tickets are being sold. Tickets are $20 each. Every 10th ticket pulled wins a mystery prize. The last ticket drawn wins half the money raised in the 50/50 raffle. The Autumn Arts and Crafts Show is its largest fundraiser. Proceeds go to organizations dedicated to improving the quality of life for children in the Fox Valley area. The club expects to sell out before the show, so don't delay if you are interested. Batavia American Legion: The next meeting of the Batavia American Legion Post 504 will be on Tuesday, Oct. 20. Dance clubs: The approach of autumn brings the usual location change for International Folk Dancing and Silk and Thistle Scottish country dancing at Fermilab, back to the rustic atmosphere of Kuhn Village Barn. There will be dancing there every Tuesday (Scottish) and Thursday (international), through the season, beginning at 7:30 p.m. The barn is located on Sauk Boulevard on the east side of the Fermilab site in Batavia. Fermilab's Barn Dance also is returning to the barn, with dances at 6 p.m. the second Sunday evening of the month, and also at 2 p.m. the third Sunday of the month, beginning in November.
English country dancing meets on first Sunday of the month through the rest of the season. "Old Fezziwig's Band" generally accompanies the dancing every other month. In between dances, are to fine recorded music. English dancing begins at 1 p.m. with an hour for experienced dancers, then at 2 p.m. with dances for everyone. Newcomers are most welcome to join this gentle variety of traditional set dancing. All dances are fully taught and walked through. There is often a potluck supper following the dancing. The public is always welcome to join any of the dance groups, and there is no need to come with a partner. In general, there is no charge for the instruction; but donations are accepted; and suggested donations are higher if there is live music or special workshops. The barn dance, which always has live music, requests $6 from adults and $3 for seniors and teens.

Fox Valley Divorce Support Group: The Fox Valley Divorce Support Group meets at 7 p.m. on the first and third Tuesdays of the month at the Infusion Tea Shoppe, 205 W. State in Geneva. New members should come at 6:45 p.m. The meeting is free and open to all. The Fox Valley Divorce Support Group provides help and information to those in all stages of the divorce process and is open to people of all faiths. Besides providing information through guest speakers, the group offers fellowship and emotional support. David and Judy Janis are the group's facilitators. Their own experiences of unsought divorces have enabled them to offer help and counsel to others who are going through the pain and challenges of divorce.
