Some still have use for teachers, it seems
More than 15 years ago, I retired from teaching mathematics in a local public school district and still have a keen interest in the formal education of youngsters. My observation stated below refers to items published in the Daily Herald on Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2009.
At the top of page 3, an article describes the lack of a new teachers' contract in Barrington Unit District 220 as school opens. A member of the Barrington Enlightened Taxpayers Association states, in essence, that teachers may get a bigger raise than they deserve, and that any raise at all for teachers would be a disservice to the taxpayer.
I then turned to page 4. At the top of page 4, is a picture of parents of students at Longfellow School in Buffalo Grove. These parents are excitedly waving their arms in joy celebrating their new found freedom after dropping their children off at school. Interesting.
