Missing Hoffman Estates girl found safe; Amber Alert canceled

A 1-year-old from Hoffman Estates who had been the subject of an Amber Alert has been found safe and sound, police said.

The baby and her mother were in police custody Sunday night after Schaumburg police issued and later canceled an Amber Alert, which had been flashed on screen during the Bears game TV broadcast.

Schaumburg Police Sgt. John Nebl said the alert was issued late afternoon Sunday and then canceled at 6:15 p.m. after the pair were found in a nearby community apparently unharmed.

Nebl said the mother, baby and the baby's grandmother - a Hoffman Estates woman who is the court-appointed legal guardian - were shopping at a strip mall in the 1000 block of North Salem Drive Sunday afternoon when the mother and baby went missing.

"(The mother) just got in the car and drove off," Nebl said.

Nebl said investigators were en route to interview the mother and no further information would be available until Monday.
