No charges in Naperville 'nonevent'

Naperville police say an original report of a machete-wielding bicyclist late Thursday was little more than a fight between two men.

Cmdr. Mike Anders said officers were called to a parking lot at 423 E. Bailey Road just after 8:20 p.m. Thursday for a report of a man stabbed with a machete.

But that's not what they found when they got there.

Anders said an unidentified man on a bicycle had gone to the Naper Trails apartment complex to see an acquaintance. But the meeting quickly escalated to a verbal dispute and then physical altercation that saw the bicyclist take a glass bottle over the head.

"Essentially we had two guys going at it in the parking lot of the liquor store when officers got there," Anders said.

The injured man was treated for a gash on his head at Edward Hospital in Naperville, but neither man would press charges and police were left with no evidence to file their own charges.

"It was an unusual set of circumstances but ended up being a mostly nonevent," Anders said.
