Wayne man charged in fatal DUI gets OK to travel out of state
A Wayne man charged with reckless homicide will be allowed to travel out of state with his college hockey team while awaiting trial.
Judge Timothy Sheldon agreed Sept. 18 to remove electronic home monitoring from the terms of bond for Onofrio Lorusso, 18. He is accused of driving under the influence of alcohol and marijuana when he lost control of a Ford Explorer on Royal Fox Drive in St. Charles and hit two trees June 14, killing passenger Cameron Godee, 17, of West Chicago and injuring two other passengers.
Lorusso still has to wear an alcohol-consumption monitor.
Lorusso has a scholarship to play for Robert Morris University of Aurora. The team practices at a rink in Bensenville, and has games scheduled this fall and winter in Iowa, Michigan and Wisconsin.
The judge also said Lorusso does not have to be accompanied by a parent on team trips. The school prohibits parents from riding on the team bus, and the school's hockey director stated in a memo that they would not allow a parent into the locker room.
He is also charged with aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence of drugs and driving under the combined influence of drugs and alcohol.
Prosecutors say tests show Lorusso had a blood-alcohol content of 0.227 - almost three times the legal threshold - and that he tested positive for marijuana after the crash.
Godee and Lorusso graduated from St. Charles East High School in June.
Lorusso's next court date is at 9 a.m. Oct. 22.
