Brewer runs wild for Schaumburg
Schaumburg senior running back Warren Brewer had one of those magical games Thursday in a Mid-Suburban League crossover clash at Wheeling: 8 carries, 187 yards and 4 touchdowns.
And his touchdowns came on consecutive carries, all in the fourth quarter, carrying the Saxons (2-2) to a 37-13 win over the stunned Wildcats.
"He was unbelievable tonight; he left me speechless," Schaumburg quarterback Mark Iannotti said of Brewer. "That easily was one of the best performances I have ever seen, not just in a game, but certainly in a quarter.
"It was outstanding. He's a big time player. He took the game into his own hands; he really came out to play today."
Wheeling (2-2) built a 13-9 halftime lead and maintained the 4-point lead into the fourth - and then it was the Brewer show.
He ran for a 73-yard touchdown down the right sideline with 10:51 left with what proved to be the game-winning points. Adam Syvertsen's PAT gave the Saxons a 16-13 edge and the Wildcats would get no closer.
"Warren is a special talent and our offensive line got better as the game went on," said Schaumburg coach Mark Stilling.
Brewer finished the scoring with touchdown runs of 67, 22 and 8 yards.
"That was the best game of my life," said Brewer, who surpassed his previous career-highs for touchdowns in a game (three) and touchdowns in a quarter (two), both last week against Hersey. "I was running slow in the first half; I was being in-decisive. I took that to heart at halftime.
"After the second (touchdown), I just thought I have to keep going. And when I got the third one, I just thought I was feeling good and wanted to get another."
Edgar Banuelos rushed for 64 yards and 2 touchdowns for Wheeling.
"The wheels fell off real fast," Wheeling coach Dave Dunbar said. "We just need to sustain stuff, and tonight we weren't able to sustain what we had done. We had our opportunities, but we weren't able to capitalize on them."
