The 411 on the 3-4 breakdown vs. Packers
Lindsey Willhite broke down the video from Sunday's Packers game to get an idea of what's in store with Pittsburgh's more experiences 3-4 defensive scheme:
First quarter
• CB Tramon Williams' dropped INT: The Packers have five men on the line and both inside linebackers walk up as if they might blitz. Four guys rush and OLB Aaron Kampman speed-rushes past RT Chris Williams' outside shoulder. Williams grabs his facemask to slow him down. Meanwhile, Jay Cutler rolls right when OLB Clay Matthews starts to escape LT Orlando Pace.
• S Nick Collins' INT: Four guys on the line as a d back walks up to the line. Five rushers come and Matthews shoves Pace backward, forcing Cutler to roll right.
Second quarter
• Johnny Knox's 68-yard catch: The Pack puts five on the line. Four rush as well as ILB A.J. Hawk. As he blitzes past Pace's left shoulder, Pace falls down. Cutler takes a hit from Hawk as he unleashes the bomb down the right sideline.
* DE Johnny Jolly's INT: One down lineman and five others standing along the line. It's a screen, so the line lets in the rushers. Williams gives Jolly a cursory shove and heads downfield looking for his target, but Jolly changes direction quickly, sticks out his left paw and corrals the screen pass meant for Matt Forte.
Third quarter
• Devin Hester's 36-yard TD catch: With fullback Jason McKie on the field, the Pack goes with three down linemen and three more guys along the line. Five Packers rush (the right outside LB drops) but they don't get anywhere. McKie picks up blitzing safety Atari Bigby with ease. Cutler keeps his eyes downfield and lobs to Hester for the season's only TD to date.
Coach Lovie Smith says:
As everyone knows, Bears coach Lovie Smith prefers not to single out players or units when it comes to blame. His roundabout take on the O-Line's performance.
"We as a team didn't play well enough to win. It's kind of as simple as that. Offensive line, any of us, all of us. So you start with that.
"We made progress. You know, a lot of new players, a lot of new guys on offensive line. We learned something. We've gotten better every time we've played together as a group. We'll see another big improvement this week.
"But again, the standard we've set, we haven't achieved that standard yet."
Why go with the 3-4?
Green Bay inside linebacker A.J. Hawk explains in this week's issue of Sports Illustrated: "This lets us play to our strength. Speaking for the inside 'backers, we're all aggressive, downhill players who want to take the game to the other team.
"The good thing about the 3-4 is that it allows you to be so unpredictable. We've got a lot of athletes and now we can turn them loose. We can rush linebackers, corners, safeties. There are so many possibilities."
