Brewer, Schaumburg pull away in second half

Schaumburg held a one-touchdown advantage at halftime against visiting Hersey but was far from satisfied by just having the lead.

"We started off good, "said Saxons running back Warren Brewer, "but we fell short with our effort in the second quarter. In the locker room at the half we talked about coming out in the third quarter with the same intensity we had to start the game."

Schaumburg did just that, storming out of the gate with two quick second half scores en route to a 30-14 win over visiting Hersey in a Mid-Suburban League football crossover at Gary Scholz Stadium.

Brewer did more than his share to help the cause. The senior rushed for 120 yards and 3 touchdowns on only 8 carries, while Eddy Batres keyed a strong defensive effort and quarterback Mark Iannotti rushed for 88 yards and threw for 98 yards and a touchdown.

Hersey (0-3) received a tremendous effort from running back Alex Vaile. The junior, thrust into a starting role due to Chris Polinski's illness, rushed for 103 bruising yards, including a 29-yard run up the middle to key a Huskies' first-half comeback.

"It was fun, just out there, playing football, getting carries, taking hits," said Vaile of the 27-carry effort. "They (Schaumburg) did their job. They had a rough first two games against Maine South and Prospect, but they came back strong.

"We did too, but we'll have to come out even harder our next game."

Brewer's 2-yard touchdown run and an Iannotti 5-yard pass to Dionte Hackler accounted for the Schaumburg first half scores. But Hersey countered with a Vaile 4-yard scoring run.

It was all Schaumburg (1-2) in the third quarter as Adam Syvertsen kicked a 40-yard field goal and Brewer ran 15 yards for another score.

Brewer's spectacular 63 yard off-tackle jaunt in the fourth quarter put the game out of reach, while a 4-yard scoring pass from Hersey quarterback Brandon Klein to Paul Moran closed out the scoring.

"This," said Brewer, "wasn't just one or two guys - this was a total team effort."
