What could be controversial?

I am horrified to hear a school official describe a speech to be given by the President to school children, on the benefits of getting good grades, as "controversial."

It is a sad comment on the state of education in this country when some people responsible for elementary school curricula are unthinkingly following the nonsensical ravings of a small group of right wing zealots.
