Wheaton Academy moves to 3-0 on the season

As well as Kai Libby played at tailback Friday night, he was a bigger scoring threat from his cornerback spot.

Libby returned 2 interceptions for touchdowns as Wheaton Academy defeated Guerin 21-0 at Wheaton College's McCully Field.

"Each week we've got a new guy stepping up," Warriors coach Ben Wilson said. "We've got so many weapons. ...

"Kai, he's just a big-time playmaker. He just makes plays. He just gets it done. Offense and defense, he ran the ball well for us."

Libby was no slouch on offense, either, carrying 14 times for 86 yards.

"Aw, I missed 100," Libby said with a big smile on his face. "I'm not happy."

The Warriors (3-0, 1-0 Suburban Christian Conference) are thrilled to be undefeated through their first three games, halfway to locking up a playoff berth, though the next five games are against 2008 playoff teams, starting with Aurora Christian next week.

But the Warriors weren't worrying about next week. They were busy celebrating that shutout Friday.

"Defensively, we're really happy with the shutout," Wilson said. "We feel like we're better defensively than we've been showing."

"Offensively, we've got a lot to work on," Guerin coach Tony Pecoraro said. "We ran the ball. Our running back (Nick D'Alessandro) had (126) yards rushing. And then drives stalled on us. That's all that happened, drives kept stalling on us. We break a run and instead of getting in the end zone they stop us on the 20-yard line and we don't score on that drive. That's the difference in the game right there. We didn't finish and they did."

Offensively, the Warriors played without quarterback Brian Pell, who dressed but did not play because of a sprained ankle. He's expected back next week, taking his spot back from junior Tommy Decker, who threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Luke Thorson in the second quarter. It was the only touchdown the Guerin defense has allowed this season.

"Decker, last week he had a touchdown pass for us and we're very confident in him," Wilson said. "He just hasn't had varsity experience, and I thought for not having varsity experience he did a nice job managing the game."
