Fenton puts up some points

After losing the first two games by a combined score of 70-0, Fenton's players were nothing but smiles as they looked up at the scoreboard that read: Bison 30, Visitors 13.

The Bison (1-2) wasted little time against Walther Lutheran, getting on the board just 2:15 into the game when Alan Geneva blocked a punt that Frank DiLauro picked up in the end zone.

"A lot of the guys were making bets as to who will score the first touchdown of the season," Fenton quarterback Eric Justiniano said. "It was kind of funny that it was a sophomore who scored on a blocked punt. But hey, points are points. It was just exciting for us to get on the board, no matter how we got on it."

Fenton ran the ball 47 times for 272 yards. All four of the scoring drives were 10 plays or longer as the Bison racked up 20 first downs for the game.

"Our big guys up front were able to create holes the whole game for us," Fenton coach Mark Farrell said. "That was probably the biggest thing we can take away from this game is the way we controlled the line of scrimmage."

The Bison used a three-headed monster in change-of-pace back Tyrell McGee, a bruising runner in Nico Watt and an option quarterback in Justiniano to get the running game going.

The long drives affected Walther Lutheran quarterback Sean Cotton, who also plays defensive back, by breaking up the offensive rhythm and wearing down the Broncos' two-way players.

"When we were playing defense we could not force them to give the ball up," Cotton said. "That really wore me down and hurt me offensively. Their line really wore us down too."

The defense and special teams played well for the Bison, who blocked two kicks, intercepted a pass, recovered two fumbles and got the ball back twice on stopping the Broncos on fourth-down conversions.

"Our defense really stepped up and wanted to make plays after the first two games," Farrell said. "We did a great job creating turnovers. We also pride ourselves on special teams and we really stood out in that aspect tonight as well."

Walther Lutheran (0-3) was led by Cotton's 141 yards passing and 90 yards rushing on only 4 carries in the loss.
