Small explosive device found near Mt. Prospect school

Mount Prospect police Tuesday are seeking the person who placed an improvised explosive device near Robert Frost Elementary School. The device was dismantled without injury.

Police were called about 11:50 a.m. to 1308 S. Cypress Drive, after a school official located a suspicious container in the park adjoining the school.

The container was what is commonly referred to as a "MacGyver" bomb, which can be assembled with ordinary household products, police said.

While someone could have been hurt if the device had detonated, it wouldn't have done massive damage, said Officer Greg Sill. "It was just a small device," he said, declining to be more specific.

School officials sent a voice mail blast to parents, informing them of the incident and saying their children weren't in immediate danger, Sill said.

Police said they believe the placement was an isolated incident. They reminded parents to warn their children against picking up any type of suspicious looking object and to notify an adult immediately.

The device is being analyzed for clues, but police said they didn't have any immediate leads on who was responsible. They're asking anyone with information to call (847) 870-5656.
