Tight-knit line leads explosive Prospect
Prospect's offense was explosive in its 48-14 pounding of visiting Schaumburg Friday night at George Gattas Stadium in the Mid-Suburban League football crossover.
The fuse was lit by the Knights (2-0) offensive line as Kyle Kapka, Matt Huene, Matt Boll, Victor Rhee and Chris Kozlowski kept the Saxons (0-2) defense in check.
Miles Osei spearheaded the attack with 15 carries for 136 yards and touchdown runs of 4 and 7 yards. Osei connected on 13-of-26 pass attempts for 233 yards and 1 touchdown.
"This is a very unified offensive line," Osei said. "They seem to feed off of Kapka. He shows the leadership."
Kapka a 6-foot, 200-pound senior center started one game last year and played on special teams.
"We are a very tight group," Kapka said. "I'm the emotional guy on the line. I like to lead by example. To keep advancing as the season goes on, we have to improve and learn from our mistakes."
For the Saxons, the mistakes were too many. They turned the ball over on a fumble on the opening kickoff, the first of five miscues.
Kapka recovered the fumble and four plays later Joe Mack scored from the 12.
Folowing Peter Bonahoom's 56 yard touchdown run for the Knights and a 14-0 lead, Steve Dazzo intercepted a Mark Iannotti (27-for-44, 2 interceptions, 1 touchdown, 278 yards) pass.
That set up Osei's 4-yard run and a 21-0 lead.
Iannotti (11 carries, 32 yards) scrambled in from the 13 as time expired to end the first quarter.
Osei conected on a 6-yard scoring pass to Ryan Ward and Grant DePalma (5 carries, 49 yards, 2 TDs) scored from the 10 to help give Prospect a 35-7 lead.
"We had chances time and time again," said Schaumburg coach Mark Stilling. "We had no response to their scores. We had a lack of discipline. It's something that we need to rectify."
"Our defense has really come up with some big stands and have helped turn the ball over," said Prospect coach Brent Pearlman. "They create turnovers with their hustle.
"Our offensive line is a tight group. Everything starts with them. Tonight we showed we can score on short drives and long (two 99-yard) drives."
Prospect finished with 516 yards of offense. John Coen kicked 6 extra points, had an interception and caught 3 passes for 110 yards. The Saxons picked up 424 yards.
