Beautify Geneva:
The Geneva Beautification Committee will do its fall planting in boxes and beds downtown at 8 a.m. today. Volunteers should report to the northwest corner of Third and James streets, if you don't already have an assigned spot. Bring gloves, pruning shears, rakes, brooms and trowels. 'Glow Ball' for couples:
Play golf in the dark at the third annual Couples Glow Ball Golf Event Sept. 12 at Orchard Valley Golf Course, 2411 W. Illinois Ave., Aurora. The evening begins with cocktails at 7 p.m., followed by an appetizer buffet and shotgun start at 8:15 p.m. Golfers receive illuminated golf balls and are outfitted with glow-stick gear for this five-hole event. Registration is $99 per team and includes green fees with cart, buffet, glow equipment, keepsakes, beverage tickets and prizes. Entry fees are due 5 p.m. Monday. Call (630) 907-0500.
NIU's new Web site for alums:
Commemorating its golden anniversary this academic year, Northern Illinois University launched a new interactive Web site that allows faculty and alumni to reconnect and share favorite memories. The Web site can be found at niu.edu/clas50. It features a brief history of the college, a calendar of anniversary-related events throughout the year and a directory of alumni allowing former students to reconnect. Visitors also can share stories, photos and videos.
Park district offers passes:
The Fox Valley Park District is promoting its "Fall into Fitness" campaign throughout September by offering a free seven-day pass to any of the district's three fitness centers in Aurora. First-time visitors 16 and older may redeem the pass for a weeklong trial at Eola Community Center, 555 S. Eola Road; Prisco Community Center, 150 W. Tickets are on sale for the third annual Women's Leadership Summit on Oct. 9 at Benedictine University in Lisle. Featured speakers are Arin N. Reeves, a consultant on racial and ethnic diversity; Tellabs executive Jean K. Holley; and Jennifer Hou Kwong, who overcame extraordinary challenges in her personal and professional life.
