DuPage County briefs
Wheaton man sentenced:
A 20-year-old Wheaton man was sentenced to five years in prison Thursday after pleading guilty to aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a child and possession of child pornography. Joshua White, of the 1200 block of Reading Court, was convicted of forcing a young girl to touch him in March, while he was free on bond for the child pornography charge from August of 2008. The judge sentenced White to two years for the child pornography conviction and three years for the sex abuse charge. He will serve the sentences consecutively.
Old drug drop-offs continue:
A state program that allows residents to safely dispose of old prescription medications will continue through 2010. The program, which places secure drop boxes at 13 police stations throughout DuPage County, was looking at being scrapped because of state budget constraints. The state pays for the pickup and disposal of the old medications. Proponents of the drop-box program say it has social and ecological benefits. The boxes help prevent teenagers from potentially abusing their parents' old medicinal supplies, proponents say. The boxes also help keep people from flushing the drugs down the toilet, which can affect water supplies and wildlife.
Police hunting burglars:
Naperville police are seeking the public's help in their hunt for burglars who broke into Nicky's Restaurant in July and removed cash and a safe from the premises. Police said the intruders entered the restaurant at 335 E. Ogden Ave. between 9:30 p.m. July 19 and 7 a.m. July 20. Naperville Crime Stoppers is offering up to a $1,000 reward for information leading to arrests in connection with the incident.
