Crystal Lake workshop aimed at helping stop home foreclosures
McHenry County's state legislators are teaming up with several Illinois agencies next week to help keep residents facing foreclosure in their homes.
Together they are putting on a workshop in Crystal Lake to provide homeowners in need of advice, personal counseling and an opportunity to take advantage of new legislation aimed at reducing foreclosures.
"By participating in this event, homeowners can literally save their homes," said Brent Adams, the state's acting secretary of Financial and Professional Regulation.
The free event takes place from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10 at McHenry County College, Building B, 8900 Route 14 in Crystal Lake.
Among the most significant opportunities for residents behind on their mortgages will be the chance to sign up for housing counseling, a move that will give them a 90-day grace period under this year's Homeowner Protection Act.
Participants also can receive advice on refinancing, foreclosure prevention, legal rights and avoiding scams, as well as one-on-one counseling.
The event is co-sponsored by state Sen. Pamela Althoff, state Rep. Michael Tryon and state Rep. Jack Franks and part of Gov. Pat Quinn's Mortgage Relief Project. For details, call (800) 532-8785 or visit idfpr.com or idprf.org.
