Lake County briefs

D76 vacancy:

Diamond Lake District 76 is looking to fill a vacancy on the school board. The unexpired term of Valerie Walker runs through April 2011. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen, 18 or older, a registered voter and a resident of the district for a year. Contact Supt. Roger Prosise, (847) 566-9221 or at rprosise@d76.lake.k12.il.us, no later than Sept. 11. Applicants should send a letter of interest and resume. Walker, who recently resigned, has been on the board for five years. A social worker, she had been an active volunteer in the schools runs a special-needs soccer program.

West Nile detected:

A mosquito pool sampled Aug. 27 in central Lake County has tested positive for West Nile virus. The pool is the first confirmed indicator of the disease's presence in Lake County in 2009. Last year, one bird and 10 mosquito pools tested positive for the virus in the county, but there were no confirmed human cases in 2008. Officials said it is particularly important to practice mosquito bite prevention now because human West Nile virus cases become more prevalent in the late summer and fall. Call the Lake County Health Department's West Nile hotline at (847) 377-8300 or visit lakecountyil.gov/Health/resources/WNV.htm for detailed information.
