5-year-old Crystal Lake girl struck by truck after she exited school bus

A 5-year-old Crystal Lake girl was injured after being hit by a truck after getting off her school bus Tuesday afternoon, police said.

The girl, whose name is being withheld by police, was taken to Centegra Hospital - Woodstock with serious but nonlife threatening injuries, officials said.

Charles F. Waller, 48, of 1233 Amberwood Dr., was driving a black 1998 Dodge Ram pick-up truck southbound in the 1400 block of Skyridge Drive at about 2:30 p.m. when he stopped for the northbound school bus carrying the girl.

He waited as passengers, including the girl, got off the bus, then started to move after the bus stop sign was closed down and the bus started moving in the opposite direction, officials said.

However, as the truck started to move, the girl crossed Skyridge toward a waiting parent and into the path of the truck, officials said.

Officials said the accident remains under investigation and that no citations have been issued at this time.
