Guadarrama, Antioch handle Streamwood
Any football coach would hate to lose a running back who rushed for nearly 1,800 yards and scored 35 touchdowns.
Fortunately for Antioch coach Brian Glashagel he has other players with the potential to step right in and not have the offense miss a beat.
Junior Josh Guadarrama scored 3 touchdowns and Steve Lorenzini rushed for 90 yards and a touchdown to led the Sequoits to a season-opening 34-0 victory over Streamwood at Millennium Field.
"Everyone wondered with Cameron (White) graduating, but I knew what we had coming up," Glashagel said. "I know what (Guadarrama) is capable of doing. He's got some wheels. He's got some good vision."
The Sequoits, who advanced to the Class 6A semifinals last season, took their opening possesson 78 yards in 12 plays. Guadarrama capped the drive with a 6-yard touchdown with 2:43 remaining in the first quarter.
Sam Green's 13-yard touchdown run with 7:51 left in the first half increased Antioch's lead to 14-0. Guadarrama gave the Sequoits a 21-0 lead late in the second quarter with a 7-yard TD run.
Guadarrama then showcased his speed on the opening kickoff of the second half. He took the kickoff 91 yards for a score and a 28-0 lead.
"The special teams did some great blocking," he said of his kickoff return. "I saw some goods hits for me and it was wide open."
Guadarrama rushed for 81 yards on seven carries. Lorenzini, who rushed for more than 1,100 yards last season, had 106 yards rushing on 23 attempts. Junior quarterback Tom Sears added 68 yards on the ground, but completed just 1 of 6 pass attempts.
"We've been anticipating coming out here for two weeks," Guadarrama said. "We finally come out here and won. It feels really good to get that."
Glashagel, who is in his third season, said it was the first shutout in his time at Antioch.
Streamwood was able to move the ball at times, but mistakes proved costly. The Sabres had eight offensive penalities. With their first two drives of the second half, the Sabres had 11-play drives into Antioch territory, but came away with no points after a fumble and turnover on downs.
"Offensively we have to stay away from penalities," Sabres coach Cal Cummins said. "We have to become a little more consistent."
Sophomore Dalton Lundeen went 11-for-23 for 126 yards in his first varsity start for Streamwood, which plays its next three games on the road. Alex Morrow, also a sophomore, led the Sabres with 38 yards rushing on 11 carries.
"(Lundeen) didn't have the reps in the summer with the varsity kids," Cummins said. "For him to step in and play against a really sound program takes some guts. I thought he did a good job."
