Previewing: Wheaton Warrenvile South
Two games, two points, two losses.
The end of last season still stings Wheaton Warrenville South's football team.
The Tigers saw their streak of three straight DuPage Valley Conference titles snapped with a 7-6 loss to Naperville North in the regular-season finale. The following week they lost 8-7 in a stunning Class 7A playoff upset by Downers Grove North.
A new season of expectations at hand, WW South wants to leave the disappointment behind.
"They didn't like what happened last year, and they lost a little bit of enthusiasm," said Tigers coach Ron Muhitch. "They want to get that back."
Eight starters return, including six on offense as the Tigers attempt to reclaim the DVC title and forge another deep playoff run. WW South will be especially strong on the offensive line where Rocco Ammons, who has scholarship offers from Illinois State and Eastern Illinois, Nick Immekus and Chris Cortopassi return in addition to tight end Dan Hohenstein.
The offense suffered a blow when receiver Steve Kmiotek went down with a torn ACL, but talent remains. Julian Banuelos rushed for 421 yards last year and fullback Tom Olp also saw significant playing time.
The most interesting position on the team is at quarterback where Mack Tracey, a receiver last year, and junior Reilly O'Toole will see time. Both also could play receiver, a spot Tracey played last season.
Cornerback Shane Dierking and lineman Matt Ives are the lone returning defensive starters. Linebackers Mike Heaton and Tom LaBelle and safety Caleb Bednarz will make an immediate impact.
If the Tigers find success against a brutal early schedule - Hinsdale Central and Maine South in the opening weeks - they'll be a favorite in the DVC and beyond.
"This is a huge challenge," Muhitch said. "It'll be interesting to see how we respond."
