Lake County briefs

Seasonal flu vaccines offered:

The Lake County Health Department has scheduled nine public clinics, between Sept. 4 and Oct. 9, for seasonal flu vaccine. The flu vaccine will not offer protection from H1N1 (Swine) pandemic influenza. The health department will provide more information on the H1N1 vaccine, including scheduling of clinics, as it becomes available. The seasonal flu shots are offered throughout the county. Appointments can be made by visiting lakecountyflu.com. Walk-ins will also be accepted. Appointments can also be made by calling the clinics directly. The health department urges residents of all ages to obtain an annual flu shot in anticipation of the flu season (typically, November to April). Officials also urge those at high risk for pneumonia, including persons at least 65 years of age or people with chronic illnesses, to talk with a nurse or health care provider about whether a pneumonia shot is appropriate for them. Call (847) 377-8470.

Car wash for swimmers:

The Libertyville High School girls swim team hosts a car wash from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at Ace Hardware, 155 Peterson Road, Libertyville. Proceeds will be used to buy new swim gear for the team.

Web site for educators:

A new Web site, www.education.lcfpd.org, allows educators to browse or search school and program offerings to meet specific needs. The new site, launched by the Lake County Forest Preserve District, contains information on field trips, in-school programs and Scout programs. It also offers an online image resource for teachers, and Explore the Fort, a curriculum built around the history and ecology of Fort Sheridan Forest Preserve. Educators can access information on classroom tools, teacher programs and grant information and sign up for e-mail updates.

Fox Lake girl still in critical condition:

Fox Lake police said the 3-year-old girl who was injured after being dragged under a car Tuesday night is in critical but stable condition at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. Police Lt. Joe Gliniewicz said the girl's medical condition remains unchanged after surgery Wednesday to repair shoulder and head injuries. Charges have not been filed against the 36-year-old woman who backed the car into the girl about 7 p.m. Tuesday, then drove off without knowing the girl was wedged under the vehicle, he said. The woman remains in DuPage County Jail on an unrelated incident. Officials said they are awaiting results of the investigation and toxicology tests to be completed by the Major Crash Assistance Team before filing any possible charges.
