Driver slams into tollway HELP truck on I-88

One person was hospitalized after slamming his vehicle into an Illinois Tollway HELP truck assisting a motorist with a tire change on I-88 Monday evening, officials said.

Brian Wyatt, 47, of Oswego, was heading eastbound on I-88 when he hit the rear of the HELP truck that was stopped on the right shoulder near Yackley Road about 7 p.m., said Master Sgt. Susan Ewald of the Illinois State Police.

The Chevy pick-up bounced off the HELP truck, went across all lanes and came to rest after hitting the median wall, Ewald said.

Wyatt was taken from the scene to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove with severe injuries, Ewald said. His condition is unknown.

The HELP truck driver and the motorist being helped were not injured, she said.

I-88 eastbound was blocked while officials investigated; the road was reopened by 8 p.m., police said.

Police continue to investigate, Ewald said, but said they do not believe alcohol played a role in the accident.

No one has been charged, Ewald said.
