PFLAG not affiliated with political party
I'm writing in response to an opinion letter printed Aug. 1, concerning participation of the two main political parties in Wheaton's 4th of July parade in the hopes of clarifying the identity of PFLAG DuPAGE.
The acronym, PFLAG, represents Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians and Gays, and is not widely recognized in the general public, except by those whose lives have been impacted by the issue. We are a not-for-profit, non-partisan, non-denominational support/advocacy/education organization focusing on the problems affecting our gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender population and their families.
There are more than 500 chapters nationwide, of which nine are located in and around Chicago. Several are also located in Mexico and the People's Republic of China. Because of our not-for-profit status, we cannot endorse or support any political entity; therefore, our listing as one of three backers of the Democratic Party in Wheaton's parade is not factual. We sincerely regret this misunderstanding.
