New Heartland principal:
Adam Law was appointed Monday as interim principal of Heartland Elementary School in Geneva. He will fill in for Margaret Pennington, who was made a central office administrator in July. Law has been assistant principal of Geneva Middle School South since 2006. The Geneva school board will now look for a replacement for Law.
Seat belt crackdown set
Aurora police will conduct special patrols Thursday at an undisclosed location to make sure motorists are wearing seat belts. Anyone caught in the front seat of a vehicle without their seat belt on might receive a $55 ticket. Police say the crackdown is aimed at reducing injuries from traffic accidents.
Pro golfer hosts clinic
Professional Golf Association pro Kevin Streelman will return to his native Wheaton to offer a free program for junior golfers at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Cantigny Park, 1S151 Winfield Road, Wheaton. Streelman, a former Cantigny golf employee and second-year PGA Tour member, will speak about his journey from Illinois junior golf to the professional circuit and answer questions from kids. A raffle benefiting the Illinois Junior Golf Association will give registered junior golfers the chance to play with Streelman or caddie for him on the day of the event. Details are at IJGA.org.
Geneva armchair tour

Cardboard boat race on
Aurora area residents might want to get a crew together to build their entry in the Fox Valley United Way's seventh annual What Floats Your Boat Cardboard Boat Race. The race takes place Aug. 22 on Mastodon Lake in Aurora's Phillips Park. The boats compete in one of five divisions - junior, adult, business, nonprofit and community. First-, second- and third-place trophies are awarded in each division. The race raises funds for the support Fox Valley United Way provides to more than 50 social service agencies.
