Center honors volunteer

Glen Ellyn resident Joyce Carey recently received the Volunteer of the Year award from the Glen Ellyn Children's Resource Center. A retired teacher for Glen Ellyn public schools and past recipient of the Illinois Teacher of the Year Award, Carey has volunteered consistently with the resource center for five years. The award was present by Jessica Rozga, the center's director, and dozens of children who attended the celebration. Carey received a one-year family membership to the Morton Arboretum in Lisle and a plaque bearing her name will be placed in a prominent location in Glen Ellyn.

Winfield run this weekend

Runners and walkers of all ages and skill levels are invited to participate in this weekend's 26th annual Winfield Run. Sponsored by the Winfield Historical Society, the Saturday event will include a 10K run, a 5K run/walk and a 1-mile run/walk. The run will start near Lions Park, two blocks west of Winfield Road on Beecher Avenue, at 7:45 a.m. for the 1-mile race and 8 a.m. for the 5K and 10K races. The registration fee is $20 before Thursday and $25 on Thursday or later. Registration is available at the Winfield Park District, 0N020 County Farm Road, or online at sign-me-up.com, or at active.com. Race day registration will be available from 6:45 a.m.

Police under review

Naperville residents are invited to offer comments on the Naperville Police Department as part of an assessment by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies. Assessors will arrive Aug. 15 to assess all aspects of the department. The public may call (630) 420-4093 between 2 and 4 p.m. Aug. 17 to give their input. There also will be a forum at 7 p.m. that day at the municipal center, 400 S. Seat-belt crackdown set

Aurora police will conduct special patrols Thursday at an undisclosed location to make sure motorists are wearing seat belts. Anyone caught in the front seat of a vehicle without their seat belt on may receive a $55 ticket. Police say the crackdown is aimed at reducing injuries from traffic accidents.
