Fox Valley National Night Out events

Carpentersville

• The Carpentersville Police Department will celebrate its annual National Night Out from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8 at Carpenter Park, corner of Maple and Carpenter avenues. Events, games and community news will be the main topics of this year's event. New this year will be microchipping. Millions of dogs and cats become lost each year. Tragically, few are reunited with their owners. Microchipping is a simple and effective way to make sure that your pet can be easily identified should you become separated. This year, they are asking residents to bring a nonperishable food item/canned good to support the local FISH Food Pantry of Dundee Township. Elgin

• The city of Elgin will host its annual National Night Out from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4 with various block parties throughout the city to celebrate crime prevention in neighborhoods. For details, call (847) 289-2530.

Dundee Township

• On Tuesday, Aug. 4, neighborhoods throughout Dundee Township are invited to celebrate the 26th annual National Night Out crime and drug prevention event. National Night Out, which is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch and co-sponsored locally by the West Dundee Police Department, will involve over 11,000 communities. From 6:30 to 9 p.m., the West Dundee Police Department and Target will host a free celebration on the east side of the Target parking lot, 999 W. Main (Route 72) that will include: food, ice cream social, police K-9 team, face painting, coloring contest, bicycle registration, child ID kits, fire department safety trailer, petting zoo, pony rides, inflatable moonwalk, critter maze, raffles, live musical performances, games, Dunk-a-Cop and karate demonstration. There will also be information on crime prevention, Neighborhood Watch, village services, vehicle displays from area police and fire departments and more. Huntley

• The Huntley Police Department will host its annual National Night Out from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4. At Del Webb, the event will include the all-star softball game and subdivision wide block party at 5 p.m., with game time at 6 p.m. Citizens First National Bank will be providing hot dogs and beverages. At Georgian Place, there will be a decorative bike parade down Allegheny Pass to the park at 6 p.m. During the event there will be an adult bean bag tournament, tattoos, face painting, four square, volleyball, live music, food and fun until 8 p.m. At Greentrees, a block party will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in the community room. Bring a dessert and/or hors d'oeuvres to pass. At Huntley Meadows at Preston Parkway and Main Street, there will be a favorite show car and/or soap box derby car show, water balloon toss, basketball clinic, popcorn and more from 6 to 9:45 p.m. The event will conclude with an outdoor showing of the Disney movie, "Cars" at dusk. Bring your derby or other show car, wear your favorite sports apparel and/or uniform and bring a dessert to pass. At Joan Avenue, between Cindy Jo Avenue and Church Street, meet your neighbors and enjoy dinner from 6 to 8 p.m. The main course and utensils will be provided by the Wuich Family. If your last name is A-M bring a side dish and N-Z bring a dessert to pass, along with your lawn chair, beverage and enjoy the fun. At Lincoln Street, there will be a traditional block party with good food, great conversation and fun from 6 to 9 p.m. At Margaret Avenue, from 6 p.m. to dark, enjoy a traditional block party in the cul-de-sac. Bring your lawn chairs, favorite snack and drink. At Michael Street, stop by for a traditional block party with food, fun, games and great conversation from 6 to 9 p.m. Bring a dish to pass and join in the fun. In Northbridge, there will be face painting, basketball, bags, name that tune, water balloon toss and more from 6 to 8 p.m. Bring a dessert to pass.

Lake in the Hills

• On Tuesday, Aug. 4, the Lake in the Hills Police Department's National Night Out Against Crime will include block parties at various locations from 7 to 10 p.m. The block parties are located throughout the village. For details, call the Community Relations Division at (847) 658-5676.

South Elgin

• National Night Out Against Crime in South Elgin will be celebrated from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4 at Concord Park, off Concord Avenue and Valley Forge Avenue, east of McLean Boulevard.

Presented in a carnival-like atmosphere, the police department and other area law enforcement and public service providers demonstrate commitment to police-community partnerships in a variety of professional and fun ways. Events include: Illinois police alarm system tactical truck; U.S. Marine Corps vehicle and Hummer display; visits from McGruff and Sparky the Fire Dog; Dunk-a-Cop dunk tank; The Balloon Magician, Tom Hollbrook; Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms emergency response vehicle and a K-9 demonstration; and Illinois State Police District vehicles and airplane flyover.

Emergency and public works vehicles are on display, so bring your camera for great photo opportunities for the kids. There will be hayrides, games for the kids, and tours of the fire district's safety house. Other demonstrations and programs include: distribution of child identification kits; South Elgin Community Development Sucker Tree Raffle (winner receives free motion detector kit for front yard); distribution of free gunlocks; police tactics and weapons, evidence procurement, crime prevention, drug and gang resistance, and traffic unit displays; Tower Hill Healthcare Center will sell snow cones and proceeds will benefit "Too Good for Drugs" education program.
