FBI intensifying search for suspect in 1998 slaying
Intensifying their search for a local fugitive, FBI officials are hoping to turn up clues in the hometown of an Aurora man wanted in connection with a 1998 gang murder.
Leoboldo J. Mendoza, 31, whose last known address was 1023 Grove St. on the city's west side, has been the subject of a nationwide manhunt coordinated by the Chicago FBI since 2001 when he was charged with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution in a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago.
According to the complaint, Mendoza was charged in state court with the January 1998 shooting death of Israel Silva in an apparent gang-related incident.
"Evidence indicates (Mendoza) fled the area in or around 2001," FBI spokesman Ross Rice said. "But we're putting the word out hoping someone may know him or know if he's been back in the area."
Mendoza, 31, is described as a 6-foot Hispanic man with a thin build. He was last known to be wearing a mustache and goatee and uses several aliases, including Leo Mendoza and "Chris."
The complaint also lists his extensive criminal history, including firearms and weapons charges, causing police to believe he may be armed and dangerous.
Anyone recognizing Mendoza or having any information about his whereabouts is asked to call the FBI at (312) 421-6700 or any law enforcement agency.
