Carpentersville man charged with stabbing girlfriend

A 43-year-old Carpentersville man was arrested over the weekend on allegations he stabbed his girlfriend in the chest and back during a dispute at her Crystal Lake-area home.

Esteban Calleja, of the 3000 block of Wakefield Drive, faces one count of aggravated battery stemming from the incident early Saturday morning, police said.

His 38-year-old girlfriend was taken to Centrega Hospital-Woodstock for treatment after the stabbing, but her injuries were not considered life-threatening, McHenry County Sheriff's Capt. Tony Cundiff said.

Deputies responding to a call for help about 3:33 a.m. Saturday arrested Calleja as he attempted to drive away from his girlfriend's residence in the 9400 block of Butternut Drive.

Calleja later admitted stabbing the woman, Cundiff said. The knife believed used in the stabbing was recovered at the victim's home.

He was transported to the McHenry County jail where he remained Monday, in part because of a hold placed on him by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

He is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday on the charge, a Class 3 felony punishable by a maximum two to five years in prison.

Nichole Owens, criminal division chief for the McHenry County State's Attorney, said Monday the office is reviewing the case to determine whether additional charges are appropriate.
