Aurora police searching for burglary suspect

Aurora police are searching for a 25-year-old man wanted for burglarizing a west side apartment in early 2008 while its occupants were displaced by a major fire.

Police say Alfred T. Johnson, a former resident of the complex in the 300 block of Old Indian Trail Road, is accused of taking a home computer and a guitar worth $1,500 from an apartment that was one of several being repaired due to damage from the April 7, 2008, fire.

Police spokesman Dan Ferrelli said residents discovered the break-in on May 5, 2008, when they were allowed back into their apartments upon completion of the repair work.

Aurora police took five additional reports of burglaries that occurred in the same complex during the same time period.

A total of roughly $10,000 in televisions, computers and other electronics were taken from the units but police cannot confirm if Johnson is connected to the other incidents.

Investigators focused on Johnson as a result of forensic evidence taken from the apartment he allegedly burglarized. Ferrelli would not elaborate on the evidence because the investigation is ongoing.

Johnson is described as a 6-foot-3-inch black man weighing 200 pounds, with black hair, brown eyes and several tattoos on his arms and hands.

He has used the name Tyris Johnson in the past.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call Aurora police at (630) 801-6655 or Aurora Area Crime Stoppers at (630) 892-1000. Callers to Crime Stoppers are anonymous and qualify for a cash reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to an arrest.
