Character should count in baseball

My grandson, age 11, is an avid sports fan. The first thing he does when the Daily Herald arrives is pull out the sports section.

Although reading the sports section is not one of my habits, I happened to see the headline of Mike Imrem's June 22 column: "Here's the right call on getting in baseball's Hall." That piqued my interest. I haven't asked my grandson if he read it; hopefully, he didn't. If he did, his mom and dad need to reassure him that character does count and let him know that Mr. Imrem knows nothing about the "Character Counts" program that has been introduced in the surrounding school districts.

My grandson has been taught, knows and believes that character counts in all of life's undertakings, and I would hope he would take that with him wherever life takes him. Like all young boys, he dreams of being a professional baseball player. I would hate for him to think that character counts in all walks of life except baseball. The schools teach that good character does matter and they tell us that the message should be for all in the school districts, not just the students. Evidently Mr. Imrem has not been exposed to Character Counts. He believes that it does not.
