Arts Walk today in Batavia:
Downtown Batavia readies for the 5th annual Art in Your Eye festival with today's Arts Walk from 5 to 9 p.m. at businesses near the bridge on Wilson Street. A map is available at downtownbatavia.com.
Pastor to be honored:
The Rev. Paul Hernandez will celebrate 50 years in Christian ministry and his 75th birthday at a dinner and service in his honor at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Eola Community Center, 555 Eola Road, Aurora. Hernandez had planned to pursue a medical career, but gave it up to follow what he felt was a divine calling to ministry. The celebration is sponsored by Jesucristo Es La Verdad, a charismatic church in Aurora where Hernandez has served as director and main professor for the School of Ministry since 1996. He also serves on the board of Fox Valley Habitat for Humanity in Aurora.
Battle of the Bands on tap:
Musicians 13 to 19 have until July 31 to register for Fox Valley Park District's first "Battle of the Bands." Interested bands need to submit an entry form, a CD of three songs and a copy of the lyrics for each song. Applicants will be notified by the end of August whether they have been selected for the competition that will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Sept. 26 at Prisco Community Center, 150 W. Illinois Ave., Aurora. The entry fee is $30; the fee will be returned to bands not selected for the final competition. For details, contact Katie Grafton at (630) 859-8606.
Elburn car show:
The Country Car Show is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Martin Family Farm, 2S111 Green Road, Elburn. Money raised will be donated to the Northern Illinois Food Bank. There are 30 classes of vehicles; the registration fee is $15. There will be food for sale, entertainment, shuffleboard and Baggo. The rain date is Sunday. Dinner-dance at farm:
There is a pastoral picnic dinner and contra dance to raise money for Garfield Farm Museum at 6 p.m. Saturday at the farm, Route 38 and Garfield Road, LaFox. Money will go toward restoring the 1842 barn erected by settler Timothy Garfield. Tickets are $75 apiece, with $50 going to the project.
