Outstanding Rotarians honored at awards dinner
• Outstanding Rotarians were honored and the 2009-2010 board of directors were installed during the Schaumburg Hoffman Estates Rotary's annual awards dinner held Monday, June 29, at the Meadows Club in Rolling Meadows. Those honored include: Rosemary Justen of Schaumburg, Aaron Ruff Four Way Test Award; Marie Gildersleeve of Hoffman Estates, President's Choice Award; Nancy Redmon of Hoffman Estates, Russell Granzow Rookie of the Year Award; and Don Minor of Lake Zurich, Rotarian of the Year.
The 2009-2010 board of directors are: president, Bruce Dopke, Schaumburg; past president, Dominic Re, Huntley; president elect, Roger Smith, Gilberts; secretary, Julie Clark, Elgin; treasurer, Ted Cross, Hanover Park; club administration director, Eileen Higginbotham, Palatine; community service director, Debbie Schmidt, Schaumburg; fellowship/membership director, Reggie Townsend, Bartlett; international director, Mary Smith, Schaumburg; vocational director, David Loop, Hoffman Estates; and public relations director, Lisa Encarnacion, Hoffman Estates.
• Matthew Stillwater, 16, of Arlington Heights, won the Silver Medal at the 2009 Junior Olympics National Tae Kwon Do Championships Thursday, July 2, in Austin, Texas.
Stillwater, who competed in the 16-17-year-old featherweight black belt division, has trained under Master Sung Min Park of Kaya Matrial Arts in Arlington Heights since age 4. He credits Master Park for his success.
• Congregation Beth Judea, Long Grove, held its Service Awards dinner Friday, June 26, to honor several congregants who have contributed enormous time and energy to the congregation. Honorees were: Heidi Sakol, Life Time Achievement Award; Jeremy Drazner, Ann Lerman, Julie and Martin Saltzman, and Wendy Wunsch, Outstanding Service Award; and Board Member of the Year Lee Silver, was honored with the President's Award.
• Tom Tasche of Elk Grove High School, Elk Grove Village, was a finalist in the Student Congress Senate at the 2009 National Forensic League (NFL) National Tournament held June 14-19, in Birmingham, Ala. This places Tasche among the top six competitors in the nation for this event which attracts over 3,500 students from all 50 states.
Student Congress, one of the 10 main events at the NFL National Tournament, encourages individual debate in a group format as students write legislation and speak on the legislation using proper parliamentary procedure.
• Bartlett resident and oil painter Marilyn Winters received the Mayor's Award at the seventh annual Festival of the Arts held June 27-38 in Bartlett Park. Village president Michael Kelly presented the ribbon and cash award from Arts in Bartlett to Winters, who who specializes in rural scenes in Illinois and Wisconsin, including familiar local landmarks and buildings.
• T. L. Arends was installed as the new president of the Bartlett Rotary Club during the organization's annual installation dinner held Thursday, June 25. Arends is the vice president for business development at Harris Bank of Bartlett. He is joined by fellow newly elected officers: Michael Musson, president-elect; JoJo Abraham, secretary; and Gerry Abraham, treasurer.
