Two arrested in McHenry after allegedly assaulting elderly woman

Two men face charges after assaulting an elderly woman and pushing her down stairs, McHenry Police officials said.

Joseph B. Barba, 25, of the 1000 block of Abbott Drive in Elgin, and Charles A. Campo II, 24, of the 1000 block of Green Street in McHenry, went to the 4000 block of Oak Avenue in McHenry early Sunday morning looking for a 22-year-old male with whom Campo was fighting with, McHenry police officials said.

However, officials said, the 71-year-old grandmother of the 22-year-old male answered the door, officials said. Barba started hitting the elderly woman, striking her in the face several times before knocking her down a flight of stairs, officials said. The two, along with a third unidentified male, fled the scene after the attack, officials said.

The third man has not been identified because police are still awaiting charges against the man, officials said.

The grandmother called 911 after the attack, officials said, and the grandson returned home at about 2:20 a.m.

The grandson identified Campo, and police arrested Campo and Barba at Campo's McHenry home.

The grandmother was taken to Centegra Hospital - McHenry where she was treated and released, officials said.

Barba has been charged with aggravated battery of a senior citizen and mob action, officials said. Campo was charged with mob action.

Both men were released on bail Monday, officials said. Barba's bond was set at $60,000 and Campo's was $20,000.
