State group honors Mikel:

Naperville Deputy Fire Chief Richard Mikel was honored with the Illinois State Crime Commission's Award of Excellence in Public Safety recently. Mikel is a 25-year veteran of the Naperville Fire Department with more than 30 years of experience in fire service. He has won copious departmental awards and has been honored by various Naperville civic organizations for his service. Mikel is a member of the state's Incident Management Team and helped develop the city's Citizen's Fire Academy. Mikel received the crime commission's award at a ceremony in Oakbrook Terrace June 24. Other excellence awards were given in government, broadcasting and community outreach.

NaperDink coming soon:

The NaperDink Triathlon, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Naperville Sunrise, is scheduled for July 25 in the city's downtown. The event starts with registration at Centennial Beach followed by a two-mile bike ride along the DuPage River Trail to Pioneer Park, a half-mile walk on a wooded trail, a bike ride back to the beach and then a float. The adult start is at 8 a.m. and others start at 10 a.m. For details, call (630) 420-2282.
