Cops: 2 passed counterfeit cash in Mundelein store
Two Chicago men were arrested Monday after one used a counterfeit $100 bill at a Mundelein store, police said.
The money actually was a $5 bill that had been altered to look like $100 currency, Mundelein police said. When officers located the suspects, they had more fake bills with them, police said.
Robert Sims, 20, of the 5000 block of South Lake Shore Drive, was charged with felony forgery and theft by deception.
Craig Williams, 19, also of the 5000 block of South Lake Shore Drive, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.
The crime was discovered about 12:15 p.m. Monday at Burlington Coat Factory, 1555 S. Lake St.
After getting a description of the suspects who used the phony money and their vehicle, police stopped the vehicle in nearby Vernon Hills and arrested Sims and Williams.
Sims and Williams are suspected of passing counterfeit money in other towns, police said. The investigation is ongoing.
