Scholarship deadline today

Fox-River Geneva American Legion Post is offering two $1,000 and two $500 scholarships to students attending or planning to attend a two- or four-year accredited college, university or technical school. The student must be a descendant of an active duty, reserve or honorably discharged veteran and have an overall grade-point average of at least 2.5 on a 4-point scale or 3.0 on a 5-scale. To get an application, send an e-mail to al.post75@gmail.com. The deadline is today.

Elburn bike map

The village of Elburn along with the League of Illinois Bicyclists is releasing the Bike to Metra guide for the village. The guide contains a map with preferred bicycle routes around the Metra station as well as bicycling and railroad safety tips. "This is another way that the village can encourage alternative transportation use," said Erin Willrett, Elburn's community development director. The guide was funded by the Public Education and Enforcement Research Study grant from the Illinois Commerce Commission. You can obtain a copy at the village hall, 301 E. North St., or at the village's Web site, elburn.il.us.

Quilters needed

Quilters and vendors are needed for the third annual Quilt and Textile Show July 17 to 19 at the Eastside Community Center in Batavia. The show will feature quilts, weaving and spinning demonstrations and quilt and textile sales. Another award for top scholar

Recent Elgin Community College graduate Andrea Andrada is the 2009 recipient of the Gigi Campbell Student Trustee Award from the Illinois Community College Trustees Association. The award, named after a former Prairie State College student trustee, recognizes exemplary student leadership. Andrada, of Elgin, is one of the most accomplished students in Elgin Community College history and has won an impressive list of accomplishments and awards. She recently finished a one-year term as the student representative on the Community College District 509 board of trustees. Other honors include being named to the First Team of USA Today's All-USA Community College Academic Team and as a New Century Scholar by the Coca Cola Scholars Foundation. Andrada graduated from ECC last month with a 4.0 grade-point-average and continues her studies this fall at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
