Lake in the Hills house fire claims cat

A cat was killed but no people were injured in a Lake in the Hills fire that started at about 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Firefighters were called to the 100 block of Pheasant Trail after neighbors reported a fire had started on the bottom floor of the two-story house, officials from the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District said.

The smoke and fire traveled upstairs, officials said, by the time the fire department had arrived on the scene.

It remains unclear who owns the home, officials said, but no one was home when the fire was reported.

The fire was extinguished in 10 minutes, officials said, but not before it claimed the life of a cat inside the home.

Damage estimates were not available, but the home was deemed uninhabitable.

The fire remains under investigation, officials said, but foul play is not suspected.

Crews from Huntley, Crystal Lake and Cary also responded to the fire.
