County kids have inside track to jobs

I am writing in response to the June 10 Daily Herald article about DuPage County officials, nepotism and summer jobs in the county. I start this response with the fact that I am strong supporter of most on the DuPage County Board, State's Attorney Joe Birkett and most of our elected officials.

However, when I began reading about the nepotism that exists within the county, the comments are, frankly, laughable. Birkett says people can cry nepotism all they want, his kids (two are employed with the county) had to go through the same hiring process. It's just comical. Just go ahead and admit it: You're a big player, your kids have the inside track to summer- and full-time work. It's how the world works, unfortunately, but at least it's the truth.

Trying to convince anyone that the "hiring officials" within the county pay no more attention to his kids' applications than they do mine is ludicrous. When you're the state's attorney, your kids get some of those privileges. Same goes for the other DuPage County officials who work the system so their kids have summer jobs. I don't agree with it, and as a taxpayer I find it troubling that these jobs are predominantly filled before the general public gets a chance at them.
