District 158 health costs rise:
Huntley Unit District 158 is facing large overruns in health insurance this year because of a number of hefty medical claims, administrators said. "We are significantly over budget in the current year for health insurance," Comptroller Mark Altmayer said. "There are several individuals incurring some costly claims." The claims have pushed the district's monthly insurance payouts from around $300,000 to about $750,000 in May. Altmayer has adjusted next year's budget to accommodate the large claims, increasing the health insurance budget from about $5 million to $6 million.
Agency fears cuts:
Officials at Little Angels, an Elgin facility that provides long-term care for the severely disabled, has joined the ranks of service agencies that fear the state's "50 percent" budget could have a catastrophic effect on their operations. Little Angels officials said the state's budget could cut Little Angels funding by 20 to 30 percent. Also, state funding has remained stagnant since 1993. "We need legislators to support a state budget that restores the cuts to human services. And we need a permanent solution to the state's budget crisis," center officials wrote in a prepared statement.
