Likely appointee named:
Waukegan resident Keith Turner is set to become the Lake County Board's newest member on Tuesday, June 16. Turner is being recommended by board Chairwoman Suzi Schmidt to fill the seat opened when Bob Sabonjian was elected mayor of Waukegan. Turner has run for public office but has never been elected. The full board will vote on the appointment after the meeting begins at 9 a.m. at the county government center, 18 N. County St., Waukegan.
Safety Day in Lake Villa:
The Lake Villa police, fire, and rescue departments will host a Safety Day on Sunday, June 14 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Representatives from the Lake County Sheriff's Office canine unit, United States Coast Guard emergency preparedness team, Cook County bomb squad, Lake County Reserve Unit, Illinois State Police and the Lindenhurst Police Explorer Program will participate. King of the Hill competition:
The Norge Ski Club of Fox River Grove will host its 5th annual "King of the Hill" competition Saturday on its newly constructed 150-foot ski jumping tower. Contestants from across the country will participate in the extreme dare devil fly-through-the-sky competition. A karaoke contest featuring some of the area's best crooners is part of the festivities. Gates open at 5 p.m. and the competition begins at 6 p.m. Admission is $5 or a comparable amount in nonperishable food goods that will be donated to the Cary-Grove Food Pantry. Senior picnic:
Lake County residents aged 55 and up are invited to the largest recognition event for seniors in Lake County on Wednesday, June 24. The Lake County Forest Preserve District's 37th annual Seniors Day Celebration is a free event from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Independence Grove Forest Preserve on Route 137 east of Milwaukee Avenue near Libertyville. The preserve will be closed to the general public that day until 3 p.m. Activities include music and dancing, sponsor exhibits, bingo, pontoon boat rides, horseshoes, trails for hiking and biking (bring your own bike), and health screenings with Lake Forest Hospital's CareCoach. Prizes will be awarded to winners of bingo and horseshoes. Seniors should bring a picnic lunch and a lawn chair. Light snacks and beverages will be provided while supplies last.
