Elk Grove woman killed crossing the street

An 83-year-old woman was hit by a pickup truck and killed after she was tried to cross a street in Mount Prospect this afternoon, police spokesman Bill Roscop said.

Ruthe H. Stathas was crossing the street at the 2300 block of South Elmhurst Road, just north of Oakton Street. The Elk Grove Village resident did not cross at a stoplight or use a crosswalk, Roscop said.

"Two vehicles stopped for her but the third didn't see her," said Roscop about the 1998 Ford pickup truck. The driver was a 41-year-old man from Des Plaines. The accident is still under investigation, but no charges have yet been filed, Roscop said.

The accident occurred at about 1 p.m. today. Stathas was declared dead at about 1:40 p.m. at Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village.
