From the armed services

• Zachary Paul Galaboff was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army May 9, 2009. Galaboff graduated magna cum laude from Loyola University Chicago with a bachelor of arts degree in classical studies, and has been accepted to the master of arts program in the humanities at the University of Chicago, where he will study classical languages for the 2009-10 school year.

The son of Chris and Catherine Galaboff and a native of Mundelein, Galaboff was appointed an officer in the Army Corps of Engineers, and will serve at Fort Sheridan while completing graduate studies.

• Navy Airman Apprentice Michael J. Smeltzer, son of Mercy J. and John J. Smeltzer of Lake Villa and a 2008 graduate of Grant Community High School of Fox Lake, was recently promoted to his current rank upon graduation from recruit training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes. Smeltzer received the early promotion for outstanding performance during all phases of the training cycle.

• Navy Seaman Recruit Quinnanthony A. Headen, son of Camille Y. Sykes of Gurnee, also recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes. Headen is a 2008 graduate of Waukegan High School of Waukegan.

During the eight-week program, Smeltzer and Headen completed training, which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety.

The capstone event of boot camp is "Battle Stations," which gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet.
