Garage fire causes smoke damage to Elk Grove Village home; car totaled

Elk Grove Village fire officials are working to determine the cause of a Sunday morning garage fire at a house on the 800 block of Debra Lane.

Battalion Chief Robert Stecki said it does not appear that the fire was of suspicious origin.

The alarm came in at 8:03 a.m., when a neighbor reported seeing smoke. The fire was contained to the garage area, Stecki said, but there was extensive smoke damage throughout the home. The preliminary damage estimate is $50,000, with major damage to a late-model Buick.

"The car sustained extensive damage," Stecki said. "The car was probably totaled."

The fire was under control in about 10 minutes. Elk Grove received assistance from Schaumburg, Rosemont and Hoffman Estates.

No one was injured in the fire. An elderly couple left the house when the fire was discovered. When they will be able to return to the home will be depend upon how soon electrical damage can be repaired.
