Get honey bee know-how at Garfield Farm's 'Bee Talk'

Garfield Farm Museum is offering a Beekeeping Lecture at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 31.

The "Bee Talk" will cover the composition of a bee hive, maintaining a hive in Northern Illinois, diseases that affect bees, what is honey and its properties, rules and regulations concerning bees and beekeeping, and how non-beekeepers can encourage and help the populations of honey bees in North America. The talk will be given by museum volunteer, Laura Andersen.

Andersen has been the volunteer beekeeper on Garfield Farm for the last 10 years. She is a Master Gardener in Florida and Illinois. Her interests are varied. She is a hunter and a shooting instructor and also teaches cooking at Country Garden Cuisine cooking school in Campton Hills where she resides with her husband, Chris and their two sons, Peter and Matthew.

Garfield Farm Museum, on Garfield Road, off Route 38, 5 miles west of Geneva, is a 380-acre historically intact former 1840s prairie farmstead and teamster inn.

There is a $20 donation for the lecture that includes an introductory book on beekeeping and refreshments. For other lecture information or to RSVP, contact (630) 584-8485 or e-mail at info@garfieldfarm.org. Seats are limited.
