Itasca ceremony to honor servicemen, women

On a day that can evoke emotional memories and swells of pride, Itasca residents and officials honor both.

The village will hold its annual Memorial Day parade at 9:30 a.m. Monday, stepping off at Bryn Mawr and Catalpa avenues. Organizers say this year's 50-unit parade will include community groups, marching bands, businesses and churches that will continue the parade's celebratory tradition.

The route will head east on Bryn Mawr, then south on Walnut Street to Usher Park, which sits at Walnut and Grove streets.

"It's pretty festive, and you see a lot of people there with their family and friends just having a good time," said Ryan Jastrzab, Itasca Park District superintendent of recreation.

This year, the parade grand marshal will be former Mayor Claudia "Gigi" Gruber, who completed four terms in office this spring.

Following the parade, the festivities will take a more serious turn during a memorial service in Usher Park led by Itasca VFW Post 5167.

Gus Gosanko, the VFW's service officer, said this memorial service has been a tradition for more than 20 years and always inspires thanks for Itasca residents who have served in the armed forces.

"We do this in respect to our fallen comrades, as well as the people who are protecting our country right now," said Gosanko, a U.S. Navy veteran who served from 1953-57.
