Teen held in Addison shooting

Prosecutors are expected to charge a 19-year-old Chicago man with gunning down an Addison teen outside his home in a weekend shooting that had several witnesses.

The suspect remained in custody Monday at the Addison police station. The Daily Herald is not naming him until he is formally charged, which prosecutors said is imminent.

Police rushed at 3:33 a.m. Saturday to a 911 call of shots fired in an apartment complex parking lot on the 300 block of Dale Drive in Addison.

Armando Huerta Jr., 18, was conscious, but suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

The Addison Trail High School student, who lived in the apartment complex, was pronounced dead two hours later at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, according to the Cook County medical examiner.

Police interviewed Huerta's friend, who they said witnessed the gun violence, but he was unable to provide information about the shooter.

Detectives caught a break in the murder investigation when they searched the slain teen's cellular phone and found a text message from a 16-year-old girl who days earlier warned him to stop calling because it was angering her boyfriend, reports said.

Huerta and the girl previously dated, officials said.

Police caught up with the suspect Sunday at his Chicago workplace. They also interviewed three witnesses who said they saw the 19-year-old Chicago man unexpectedly open fire early Saturday while they were out driving with him.

Authorities characterized the motive for the shooting as romantic jealousy. They said the suspect, though, does have known gang ties.

Authorities are expected to release more details when the man appears in DuPage County bond court, which may come as early as Tuesday.
