No arrests in Roselle 3-year-old's shooting death
Chicago police said Monday no arrests have been made in connection with the weekend shooting death of a 3-year-old boy from Roselle.
Police said the shooting of Jaquan Reed remains under investigation. The boy was staying with relatives who live on the 4700 block of West Van Buren Street in Chicago. Police would not say if they had identified who shot the youngster.
The Cook County medical examiner said Sunday afternoon the boy was shot by one of two other juveniles staying at the house.
Other media outlets are reporting the mother of the boy was inside the home at the time of the shooting, but police would not confirm those reports Monday. The shooting occurred early Sunday morning inside the home.
Meanwhile, the state's Department of Children and Family Services has opened an investigation into allegations of neglect of the toddler. Officials from the state agency said this is the first contact they have had with the boy's family. DCFS officials would only say the neglect report came via the agency's hotline phone number like all reports of neglect come in.
The neglect investigation will be run simultaneous to the police department's homicide investigation. Officials from the state agency were quick to note that the outcome of their investigation will have no impact on the criminal investigation.
"We are not part of any decision-making process for criminal charges," said DCFS spokesman Kendall Marlowe.
A report on the department's findings is due within 60 days, Marlowe said. If neglect allegations are substantiated by the state, it would impact a parent or guardian's employment options, he added.
Marlowe would not say whether the family of the other juveniles who were in the house when Jaquan was shot are being investigated as well.
Funeral arrangements for the boy are pending.
