Wheaton's Krueger wins three state titles

There was a sense of familiarity during Saturday's IHSA boys gymnastics individual championships at Lincoln-Way East.

For the second year in a row, Wheaton co-op senior Tim Krueger put on a show, winning vault, parallel bars and floor exercise.

"It's pretty exciting knowing you've got six state medals under your belt," Krueger said. "It's such a good feeling. It was an awesome night."

Krueger wasn't sure how the night was going to turn out after falling on vault during preliminaries.

"I wasn't sure if I was going to make it, and then I just kind of relaxed and listened to some music and got my nerves down," he said. "After winning floor (exercise) I came out and wasn't too worried and figured whatever happens is going to happen."

Downers Grove North senior Doug Rybar capped his high school days by winning the all-around title with a 56.450, comfortably in front of Glenbard South junior Scott Wiedmeyer, who was making his first state appearance.

Rybar also won on still rings and took second place on pommel horse and high bar.

"It's just a great feeling to end on a high note like this," Rybar said. "It's more than winning the all-around but being there in the Top 5 in all the events."

Wiedmeyer had a wonderful debut in the finals, taking second on vault and third place on parallel bars and high bar.

"I was pretty much satisfied with everything I did," Wiedmeyer said. "It was basically a good meet. I wanted to win but still ended up doing a pretty good job."

The final two winners were Chicago Agricultural Science's Justin Maxwell who won high bar, and York senior Kyle Carmona who took top honors on pommel horse.

"I didn't have any problems with my routine, but I didn't think I was going to win," Carmona said. "But I did and it was pretty satisfying. I haven't fallen once on horse this year."

Neuqua Valley's Timmy Kosanda took fourth place in the floor exercise, while teammate Jack Boyle also netted fourth place on pommel horse.

Lake Park's Gary Soper took second place on still rings for the second consecutive year, York's Caleb Strejc placed second on parallel bars and Glenbard North's Jesus Soto took third on pommel horse.
