Saxons comply with IHSA investigation

Schaumburg athletic director Tim Kirby is hoping to have a pair of issues with the boys basketball program wrapped up soon.

One is finding a replacement for Bob Williams, who submitted his resignation as head coach Monday. Kirby said the opening for the position was posted within District 211 on Tuesday.

The other is an IHSA investigation which Kirby said started a week ago into a pair of alleged by-law violations.

Kirby said the alleged violations are related to organizing a team outside the IHSA boys basketball competition calendar during the school year and contact with students who were asked to play in spring league games directly by coaches.

"We were asked to withdraw the coaches of any more contact (with players) by the IHSA and we're going to honor that," Kirby said. "Until we get a ruling that will be the case."

Kirby hopes the cooperation will help when the IHSA makes its ruling, which he said could come by the end of the week.

"(Principal) Tim Little and I talked to (IHSA assistant executive director) Kurt Gibson at length," Kirby said in relation to any possible sanctions. "They like to see how the school handles the situation first and take the lead from that."

Kirby also hopes to find the next person to lead the Schaumburg basketball program as soon as possible. He said interviews could begin as early as Monday.

"My personal feeling is we've got some quality young guys in our district," Kirby said. "I'd like to take a look at those people first before we open it up to the outside."

Williams built Schaumburg into the premier boys basketball program in the Mid-Suburban League and one of the best in the state.

The Saxons won the Class AA state title in 2001, finished fourth in 1999, made the Elite Eight in 2006 and have 16 consecutive winning seasons.

"We're trying to move forward and Bob is moving forward," Kirby said. "Bob is a quality guy and a wonderful basketball coach."
